The Accountant Who Actually Wants to Know Your Business

Guilherme Oliveira built Goldfin Advisory on a quiet but radical idea: that the most useful thing a numbers person can do is show up before the year-end, not after it.

There is a particular kind of dread that visits small business owners every January. The books are closed, the accountant has filed, and somewhere in the summary is a number that feels wrong, too high, too low, a missed opportunity calcified into a done deal. Nothing left to do but note it for next time.

Guilherme Oliveira has been on that side of the table. Not as the accountant, but as the person staring at the number. Before he founded Goldfin Advisory, he worked across both finance and operations, close enough to the daily machinery of running a business to understand why most accounting relationships feel like they arrive slightly too late. 'I've sat on the side where the numbers are just something you have to deal with at the end of the month,' he says, 'and it's made me much more interested in what actually helps a business owner than in what's technically correct on a form.'

That shift in perspective is what Goldfin was built around. The practice, which Oliveira launched this year from Duke Street in Essex, handles the full range of compliance work: bookkeeping, payroll, VAT returns, corporation tax, self assessment, Making Tax Digital. The fundamentals, done properly. But the part Oliveira considers genuinely interesting is what sits alongside that, monthly management accounts, cash flow forecasting, tax planning conversations that happen whilst there is still time to act on them. A clear, current picture of where a business stands and where it is heading, not a retrospective filed six months later.

Fixing the timing is one part of it. Fixing the relationship is the other.

'I'm not trying to build the biggest practice in Essex. I'm trying to build one where I know every client's business well enough to be useful without being asked.'

That is a deliberately unfashionable ambition in a sector that has spent years automating, scaling and packaging itself into platforms. Oliveira is building slowly, by design. Fewer clients. Closer working. He describes it less as a filing service and more as a growth partnership, the kind of arrangement where your accountant already knows what question to ask before you think to raise it.

His BSc in Banking and Finance gave him the technical grounding. The operational roles that followed gave him the texture. He is particularly sharp on the areas where business owners most often leave value on the table or stumble into avoidable complexity: director remuneration structures, pension and benefits planning, and the thorny territory of IR35 and employment status for contractors and consultants working through limited companies. If you run your own limited company and you have ever wondered whether your VAT scheme still makes sense, whether your salary-dividend split is optimised, or whether a contract that feels outside IR35 really is, these are the rooms Oliveira clearly enjoys thinking in.

Goldfin is backed by the Certax network, which brings the infrastructure and resources of an established national accountancy brand to what is, in practice, a boutique operation. The combination matters: clients get the support and compliance rigour that a larger network can provide, without the anonymous client-portal experience that tends to come with scale.

Fees are fixed and monthly, which removes the small but chronic anxiety of wondering what this particular phone call will cost. There are no surprise invoices. You know what you are paying, every month, from the start.

Oliveira offers a free initial consultation, no strings attached. For sole traders trying to understand their options, limited company directors who suspect their structure could be working harder, or growing businesses that want a sharper view of their finances before the year-end arrives with its verdict, that first conversation costs nothing but time.

Some accountants file your accounts on time and correctly. That matters. But Goldfin's proposition is that the most valuable work happens in the months before the books close, and with an accountant who already knows your business well enough to care about the answer.

Are you paying yourself the wrong way? Most limited company directors settle on a salary and dividend split once and never revisit it. Tell me your profit and how you currently take it, and I'll tell you what the most efficient split would be — and what the difference is worth. If you're already doing it right, I'll say so.
